FADE IN

INT. SUPERMARKET - DAY

The AMBIENT MURMUR of the shoppers envelopes everything.

BEEPS can he heard amongst the murmurs as items pass over scanners; their price appearing on monitors.

KEVAN ANDREWS stands waiting in line. He is an above average looking guy though his appearance can be questionable as a result of his style in clothes and his glasses. It did not help that was mostly shy at times calling for awkward situations.

He has a chocolate bar in his hands and is looking over the rest of the assorted treats near the check-stand.

Placing it on the counter, the CHECK-STAND GIRL slides it across the scanner. The name on her name-tag reads Amanda.

Kevan cannot help but notice the details of her beauty. Her long curly locks of auburn hair, her piercing blue eyes, and a smooth porcelain face that appears to have no make-up on it.

AMANDA
Well?

Enamoured by her looks Kevan completely missed what she had asked.

KEVAN
Excuse me?

AMANDA
A preferred customer card. It gives you special discounts that customers who don’t have the card can’t receive.

Kevan stands there for a moment processing what she just said.

NARRATOR (V.O.)
Kevan was taken aback by the offer. All he wanted was a delicious chocolate bar with a caramel covered nougat and instead was being asked indirectly if he wanted to become a man.

CUT TO:

FLASHBACK - INT. SUPERMARKET - DAY

Kevan is 6 years old as he stands at the counter.

His head barely tall enough to see the food as it’s quickly swiped across the scanner.

He pushes his over-sized glasses up the bridge of his nose just in time to see his favorite candy bar come into view.

He smiles up at his DAD who sees Kevan’s excitement and gives him his candy bar now that it had been scanned.

NARRATOR (V.O.)
Kevan remembered shopping with his dad as a kid. He especially remember how confidently his father would pull his preferred customer card out when asked for it.

The murmur of the supermarket is silenced as Kevan’s dad pulls out his wallet. Out comes the laminated preferred customer card in SLOW MOTION shimmering under the fluorescent lights.

NARRATOR (V.O.) (CONT'D)
His voice would boom as he confidently responded with a resounding, "Yes, I do."

CLOSE ON Kevan’s father’s mouth as it repeats "Yes, I do" in sync with the narrator.

Following his response, Kevan’s father throws the cashier a smile, making the cashier giggle and smile coyly.

NARRATOR (V.O.) (CONT'D)
It was a sense of manliness that he revered in his father as a child. A reverence that disappeared once adolescence set in and his own teenage existential angst drove him away from his father.

INT. HALLWAY - NIGHT

TRACK IN as a teenage Kevan can be seen coming up the stairs at the far end of the hallway. He enters the first room at top of the stairs as YELLING.

KEVAN
You never understand what I’m trying to say! No one does!

His father comes up the stairs just as the door SLAMS shut.

BACK IN THE SUPERMARKET

Kevan still stands at the register.

NARRATOR (V.O.)
Now presented with the preferred customer card that melancholy reverence he held for his father returned and Kevan wanted nothing more at that moment than to a man like his father.

KEVAN
     (smiling)
Yes. Yes, I would like preferred customer card.

Amanda returns the smile.

AMANDA
Awesome. You’ll save 25 cents with this purchase. Just fill this out.

Amanda hands Kevan the form.

Glued to it is the card shining under the fluorescent lights. As he sees his reflection in the plastic.

NARRATOR (V.O.)
Kevan had come in for some candy and he was about to walk out with a new found independence. He could only imagine the possibilities...
